Breakdown of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Three-Act Structure)

By Fred Trujillo

The Three-Act Structure is the most common structure in film. Although this structure is on the more basic side, you will find that every movie unknowingly follows this structure. Because these beats are more basic, this structure comes out on the shorter end. Below I have broken down Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse into Three-Act Structure beats.

Act 1

Set-Up

We get introduced to Miles in his real world; Miles at school, Miles with his family, and then Miles with his Uncle Aaron. We see how he is different between his family self and school self.

Inciting Incident

Miles gets bit by a spider and changes his world.

Plot Point 1

Spider-Man entrusts Miles to use the override key to destroy the super collider. While training, Miles breaks the override key and has to find a way to fix it.

Act 2

Midpoint

Miles wants to destroy the super collider, but the other Spider-Beings don't believe Miles can do it. So Miles runs to his Uncle Aaron's house and finds out that his Uncle is the Prowler and working for Fisk.

Plot Point 2

After being broken, Miles gets his powers and can destroy the super collider once and for all.

Act 3

This is the battle between the Spider-Beings and Fisk. Miles joins the fight and tells everyone to get back to their universe.
